Growing Up If the enormous headline on my homepage didn’t give it away, I was born in South Shields and grew up on what many friends delight in reminding me is the “lesser side of the river” in Gateshead (I disagree, but that’s a whole different topic). I grew up in a Christian home and school life, so I was raised to appreciate values like integrity, tenacity, and humility (unless it’s about Gateshead, of course). I went to school at Emmanuel College in Gateshead, and fully embraced their philosophy that education from Emmanuel is about not just grades on a page but also about character and responsibility. I threw myself into all they had on offer: I enjoyed charities work, volunteering as a librarian, and the arts, involving myself in school productions, choirs, and also lessons in clarinet and public speaking. Over the years I had a number of achievements and memories - particularly with my charities role. I played a significant role in raising £36,000 to build a school in South Africa as part of Emmanuel’s 25th anniversary school-wide initiative. During that period I covered some of the actions as a writer for The Hook. Having made a callout for entertainment writers, I pitched to them the option of having some political coverage on their website, arguing that politics, if written correctly, can have the same entertainment value as other parts of their news coverage did. They took a chance on me and I worked with them to agree on what style and angle to approach the coverage from. BBC Election Night 2019 - Election Night In 2019 I worked with BBC on election night as a runner on the OB of the Newcastle count. It was a huge night, both in terms of the political results, but also one of personal achievement as we were able to deliver the first result of the night. It was a great opportunity for me to experience how OBs are managed and arranged, meet politicians present and future, and be a (small) part of one of the BBC’s biggest news operations. One key job I had was to chat to candidates and activists and establish their expectations from the night, after speaking to one of the Liberal Democrat campaigners I was able to feedback to the hub that there was concern over Jo Swinson (then Lib Dem leader) retaining her own seat. While this wasn’t an exclusive, I was able to corroborate similar rumours other journalists were hearing all over the country.
